Over the past two years, Chad Ochocinco said that he would go overseas and play soccer.
Ochocinco is following through on half of that comment: he is going to be doing it domestically. He gets his chance starting Wednesday as Sporting Kansas City has invited the Bengals wide receiver for a four-day tryout. If successful, the trial period can be extended.
Ochocinco, who is working out with a soccer trainer, did not return a call from The Enquirer. He did say through a team statement: "Due to the NFL lockout, I'm excited to be able to follow my childhood dream of playing for a Major League Soccer team. Thanks to Sporting Kansas City for giving me this opportunity."
It’s good to know that there is one constant through all of this turmoil in the NFL: Ochocinco is making headlines. I’ve heard a little bit about his futbol playing days and he’s supposedly pretty good. He spent some time this winter hanging with the stars on Real Madrid and said he kicked the ball around with them a little bit. Will he make the MLS squad? I hope so. He won’t be a star, but after all, the MLS is just as interested in big names as it is in talent. Plus, Ochocinco is an athlete. He’s in great shape, and believe it or not, he works hard. Regardless, he probably won’t have a huge impact for them on the pitch. Off the field, however, he’s going to be an icon. Sporting Kansas City will welcome their coolest name since Teal Bunbury, and Kansas City has been lacking…well they’ve been lacking a lot of things, but specifically they’ve been lacking someone who makes a lot of headlines. He’d be a good fit. No matter how much hype this gets, though, part of me doesn’t believe a word of it.
